Topeka Zoo & Discovery Center

Let’s have fun in Topeka! We’ll start at the Topeka Zoo, spend the morning there and then have a picnic lunch. We’ll spend the afternoon at the Discovery Center.

 

Fee covers admissions and transportation. Kids will need to pack a lunch and water bottle.

Wet & Wild in Emporia

Come on kids! We are going to jump in the van and head out of town in search of a good time in Emporia! We’ll play at Peter Pan Park’s playgrounds and splash pad and then stop for ice cream on the way home.

 

Parents, please make sure your child eats lunch before the trip! They will need bathing suits, sunscreen, a towel and dry clothes to change into just in case.

 

Fee covers transportation. Kids will need $ for ice cream.

Out & About

 Hey kids, enjoy a morning out and about with your friends! We will take the rec van and head to one of our great parks in the Burlington or New Strawn area, maybe take a tour of a local place of interest, stop by the library or museum, possibly make a craft—each day will be different so come dressed comfy and in clothes you don’t care if they get dirty.

Parent/Child Fishing Trip

Hey kids, grab an adult who would like to help you fish & go on this trip. No pole, no problem as we have several for you to use. We will head to Gridley Lakewhere you will hopefully catch a few fish. Bait & transportation will be provided. Eat supper either before or after the trip.

Adults will need a fishing license.

Teen Trivia Night

Hey teens, the Coffey County Library Burlington Branch is going to host a couple of Teen Trivia nights here at BRC this summer as part of their summer reading challenge! The plan is to get into groups and have some friendly competition in categories that fit their summer reading theme, “Ocean of Possibilities.” You can expect questions about Pirates, Vikings, Ocean Geography, Ocean Wildlife, Mythical Sea Creatures and Ocean Voyages. Each round will have 5 questions for a total of 30, and the June and July questions will be completely different. It’ll be a fun way to spend an evening with friends!

Boogie Burn

This is a FREE CLASS for moms and kids. We’ll put together playlists that you can freestyle danced to with your kiddos or on your own! Just a fun way to burn some calories and connect with other moms and kids.

This will be in the cardio room upstairs, so numbers will be limited. If we need to, we’ll offer a second class from 9:30-10:00am

*K-State Research and Extension will be offering some fun and educational curriculum-based classes for kids here at BRC!  Staff is being hired and trained and dates will be set ASAP. 

 

*Chris and Alison Smith will chaperone a Youth State Park Overnighter.   Kids in 5th-8th grades will have the opportunity to stay at a cabin at one of the beautiful state parks in Kansas to enjoy hiking, fishing, hot dogs, s’mores, and a big camp breakfast.  Dates and more details to come.

Little Cats Summer Basketball Camp

Make sure to get your kiddos signed up for this great camp hosted by Burlington Wildcats Coach Logan and Burlington Ladycats Coach McGown that will include fundamental drills, competitive competitions & more! Each kid will get a handout with drills & skill work to take home and do on their own! Fee will include T-shirt.

It’s time for Flag Football!  Games will be Saturday mornings, beginning September 24 and run for approximately 6 weeks.  Flags will be provided for each player.  Volunteer coaches are needed!

Youth Soccer

It is time to sign up for the youth soccer league!!  Boys and girls 6-13 years can play in this competitive league.  Games will be Tuesday nights, starting September 6 and will run approximately six weeks through October 11.  You will compete in one of three age divisions:    Midgets,  Minors or Majors.  8th graders who do not turn 14  before September 1st, 2022 will also be eligible.  Shin-guards are required. Volunteer coaches needed.

Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in a summer golf program! BRC, in conjunction with high school golf coach Julie Dawson, will offer a summer instructional golf program in late June and early July at Rock Creek Country Club. There will be a beginners class (1st-4th grade) and an advanced class (5th-8th grade). Clubs will not be provided so be sure to bring your own!

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

 

Lifeguarding

Do you need a summer job and/or want to work a few hours during the school year?  By successfully completing the lifeguarding course you will be eligible to be a lifeguard at the Recreation Center indoor and/or outdoor pools!  The lifeguarding course includes First Aide and CPR training.  Students need to bring suit and towel each day.  There will be a lunch break each day.  There will be a 10 student maximum and 5 student minimum for this class.

Prerequisites for Lifeguarding

1.)  Be at least 15 years of age by May 29, 2022

2.)  Swim 300 yards (6 lengths in our pool) continuously, using the strokes in the following order:

· 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing (performed either by breathing to side or front)

and a stabilizing, propellant kick

· 100 yards of breaststroke

· The last 100 yards may be a mix: front crawl/breast stroke

 

No refunds will be given if you are unable to meet these prerequisites.

May 23rd-25th (will meet from 9:00am-5:00pm)

Lifeguard Recertification

Need to renew your lifeguard recertification?  Get signed up on one of the following dates to take your

recertification classes.  Upon successful recertification you are eligible to work as a lifeguard at BRC.  No refunds will be given if you are unable to meet the prerequisites.

FALL FAVORITES

Glow Show Dance Fun      

Learn a simple routine then get your “glow” on and  perform at the annual Glow Show at the BHS football game in October.  The fee covers instruction and glow   materials (poms, etc) that you will be using at the Glow Show!   This is a pompon class that learns a dance for the Glow Show and then is finished. Maximum of 20 people. If we get over 20 signed up we will offer a second class at 4:00pm. We will announce the date of the game performance at a later date.

Pom Pon

Join this performing group to work on rhythm, coordination and dance moves!  This class will run from September through February.  Participants will perform several times throughout the year at various sporting events.  The fee  covers classes from Sept through Feb. There will be an  additional t-shirt fee prior to the basketball game.
